Crafty Dad: Make your Own Paint

Painting is the universal tool that children have used for years to set their imaginations free on paper and unfortunately on the occasional wall. I love doing all sorts of projects with my kids involving paints, so when I noticed that were running low; we decided to do something a little different by actually making homemade paint from scratch.

Sure you can go to the nearest store and pick up your own paint, but where’s the fun in that? Making it with your kids is not only eco-friendly; it's cheaper and it’s a great hands-on project that your kids will love.

Here's what you'll need:

Some flour
Some water
Some food coloring

For every 2 tablespoons of flour, add 4 tablespoons of water, along with 15 drops of the food coloring of your choice.

Encourage your children to get involved and be helpers by allowing them to mix the solution. Just make sure that it's mixed well.

And that's basically it. Of course, make sure that the proportions are equal to the quantity of paint that you're making. Once you're complete, you'll have your very own paint that you can do all sorts of fun things with.

Here's a fun little project that we did with our homemade paint using coffee filters and a salad spinner.

If you tried this recipe yourself, I'd love to hear how it turned out!
