Fatherly Stuff: In the #WorldofCars, Planes Rule the Skies!

In the #WorldofCars, Planes Rule the Skies!

If for some reason you were trying to find me and my son in a crowd of people, it wouldn’t be a difficult task. All you would have to do is look for the guy holding the hand of a boy wearing the Lightening McQueen t-shirt, along with matching sneakers, backpack and probably a hat. Since before he could walk, it's been no secret that he is a die hard fan of the movies Disney Pixar Cars and Cars 2. He loves pretending to turn on his engine and race through the house. Whether it's at school, the park or otherwise, he usually will keeps his best buddy, a Lightening McQueen car, stashed in his pocket wherever he goes.

But there’s a new sheriff in town.  Ladies and gentlemen, meet Dusty Crophopper.

My son and I were able to get acquainted with Dusty last week when I took him to see Disney Planes for his very first movie going experience. Set in the world of Disney Pixar's Cars, Disney Planes is about a small crop duster plane with big dreams to race on the world stage. On the way to the movie, it was pretty obvious that he was nervous. I guess the idea of being in a big, dark room frightened him, but I assured him that I’d be right next to him the entire time and that the movie would be awesome... Thankfully, Disney didn't make me out to be a liar!  The movie was great, but for me the best part of it all was being able to  glance over at my son and see the excitement in his face has he watched Dusty race across the skies, all while visiting different places based on real-world landmarks as well as making new friends along the way.

After the movie was over, Disney Planes was all he can talk about on the way home.

So it was no surprise that the next time we found ourselves at our local Wal-Mart, he just about fainted when we came across the Disney Pixar Car/Disney Planes section. There are still plenty of Disney Pixar Cars toys left but they won’t be there for long, so any Lightening McQueen, Tow Mater and Finn McMissile fans should head down to Wal-Mart and get them before they run out. Since we have so many Cars toys already, we decided that we would complement our collection buy picking up a Disney Planes toy. There were so many to choose from, my little guy had a tough time deciding. However after moments of deliberation, he finally settled on the Disney Planes Sky Track Racing Set. The play set only comes with one plane to race with, but since it is designed to fit other Planes characters that are on the market, we picked up a die cast single of Skipper, who was one of the more enjoyable characters in the movie.

Can you tell he's excited?

Retail $5.99 in Wal-Mart stores

We could barely walk into the house before he started clamoring to play with is new goodies. The setup of the racing course was quick and easy to do and we worked together on adding all of the stickers that came with the track. He was so excited to build the set, he even told me, "Daddy, this is gonna be better than great. This is gonna be awesome!"

Of course, my son wanted to be the hero, so he chose Dusty as his plane and I chose the wisecracking veteran, Skipper. Once we got Dusty and Skipper hooked up to their track, the race was on! With over 5 feet of track, the planes zoomed through the course. But, there can be only one winner and as close has our races were the switches that lowered the checkered flag on the side that reached the finish line first ensured that there was never a question to who was the winner of the world flying cup. For our race, we thought it would be fitting to have some special guests in attendance...

At the end of the day as I was putting him to bed, he asked me if he Dusty could sleep next time him. I had no qualms with that and I prompter tucked both my son into bed, with Dusty right beside him.

The beginning of a beautiful friendship

When all is said and done, I think there will always be a place in his heart for Lightening McQueen. Just as long has McQueen is willing to make room for Dusty Crophopper.

Question: Have you taken your child to see Disney Planes yet? What did they think of it? If not, what movies are you planning to see?

  2. Planes does look like a great movie, but we still limit our kiddo to at home theater and go through the old fashioned Disney movies. We have limited TV at home and movie theaters require him to sit still for too long.
